Comparative Analysis of Persian Works by Shaikh al-Ishraq and Mathnawi Ma’navi from the Perspective of Allegory
Abstract
A thorough and in-depth study of the works of some Iranian scholars and mystics reveals their meaningful contributions and suggests the continuity of their method. Mawlānā is a poet who, according to his testimonies and his own works, has influenced his predecessors and mystics. On the other hand, Shaikh Shahāb ad-Dīn Suhrawardi, known as Shaikh al-Ishraq, is a scholar who has had a serious impact on philosophers and mystical ideas after a certain philosophical-mystical view.A brief view of Suhrawardi’s writings reinforces this suspicion that  Mawlānā has also seen in his Mathnavi. Mystical works has special language that carry mystical experiences and didactic points. One of the important areas in the expression of mystics and philosophers is the use of parables and stories. The Persian works of Suhrawardi, in which the Shaikh language is approached in the language of mystical works, is full of allegories and anecdotes. A view of Persian works of Suhrawardi leads the reader familiar with Mathnavi into meaningful parallels between the allegories and the anecdotes of these works. The present research seeks to examine the structure and content of these allegories in a comparative and descriptive-analytical method.

Keywords: Mathnavi Ma’navi, Suhrawardi’s Persian works, comparative literature, allegory.
