The present study aims to examine the position of the intellect in Ibn ʿArabī’s speculative mysticism. Muslim mystics have long been concerned with regards to the intellect, and their discussions have led many to perceive Sufism as a discipline fundamentally opposed to rationality and logic. In this article, I seek to investigate this common belief by exploring Ibn ʿArabī’s views in his magnum opus, the Futūḥāt al-makkiyya. It is goes without saying that the viewpoints of a mystic of Ibn ʿArabī’s caliber can significantly refine our understanding of how the intellect and Sufism intersect.
